Miguel Ángel López Velasco – Status: In Progress & Under Investigation
August 25, 2025In January 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped in Karachi while investigating extremist networks, and days later, he was filmed delivering statements under duress before being brutally beheaded and dismembered by militants linked to al-Qaeda.
Daniel Pearl’s last words/work: “My name is Daniel Pearl. I am a Jewish American from Encino, California, USA …”
Journalist Information:
Name: Daniel Pearl
Age: 38
Gender: Male
DOB: 10/10/1963
Nationality: American
Last company worked for: The Wall Street Journal
Family: Daniel left behind his at the time pregnant wife, Mariane Pearl, their son, and his parents, Judea and Ruth Pearl, and his sister.
Incident Information:
Date of incident – February 01, 2002
Location of the incident – Karachi, Pakistan
Offense victim of: Assassination
Weapons included – Knife
Suspect(s) Information:
Name: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM)
Proof of Targeting the Journalist: The proof that Daniel Pearl was deliberately targeted was the videotape his captors released, in which they forced him to state his Jewish identity and American nationality before his beheading, showing he was chosen as a symbolic hostage because of who he was rather than any random circumstance.
Reason for Killing: Daniel Pearl was murdered by al-Qaeda-linked militants who accused him of being a spy and forced him to declare his American and Jewish identity on video. His killing was a propaganda act meant to intimidate journalists and send a message against the U.S., Israel, and the press.
Progress of the Case: After Daniel Pearl’s 2002 murder, Pakistan convicted Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and sentenced him to death, while three others got life terms. Nearly two decades later, in 2020, a Pakistani court overturned Sheikh’s death sentence, and in 2021 the Supreme Court upheld his acquittal, leading to his release from prison. Despite U.S. and family outrage, the case ended without full accountability, while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed remains detained at Guantánamo after confessing to the beheading but has not been tried for it.
Sucess Factor in the Case: The only real success factor in Daniel Pearl’s case was the swift initial conviction in 2002 of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh and his accomplices, which at the time gave Pearl’s family and the international community a sense of justice. It also briefly signaled that Pakistan was willing to act against extremist networks under global pressure.
