On June 5, 2022, British journalist Dom Phillips and Brazilian Indigenist Bruno Pereira were shot dead while traveling near Vale do Javari, home to many uncontacted peoples. Phillips was researching a book on saving the Amazon, while Pereira, working with UNIVAJA, was meeting Indigenous leaders after securing a FUNAI license in 2020.

Dominic “Dom” Phillips went missing on June 05, 2022, during a reporting trip in the Brazilian Amazon with Indigenous issues expert Bruno Pereira, and their remains were found 10 days later, with gunshot wounds.

Reason for Killing: The Brazilian federal police have concluded that the murders were driven by Pereira’s environmental monitoring work and his defence of indigenous rights in Vale do Javari, an indigenous territory.
Progress of the Case: On June 15, a second man named Amarildo da Costa da Oliveira, who was arrested days before in connection with the case, confessed to shooting and killing Phillips and Pereira and revealed the location of their bodies, confirmed by the Federal police.
