The Cannes Film Festival 2026 has dedicated part of its official selection to French photojournalist Antoni Lallican, honoring his work and legacy after he was killed in a Russian drone strike while covering the war in Ukraine. Festival organizers announced the tribute during the unveiling of this year’s lineup, recognizing Lallican’s contributions to conflict journalism and visual documentation of war.
Lallican, a French freelance photojournalist, was killed in October 2025 near Druzhkivka in Ukraine’s Donetsk region when an FPV drone struck the area where he was working alongside Ukrainian forces. A Ukrainian colleague was also injured in the same incident. Reports indicate both were wearing protective gear clearly marked “PRESS” at the time.
Known for his long-term coverage of conflict zones, including Ukraine, Lallican had built a career focusing on the human consequences of war. His work was published across major international outlets and often centered on civilian life under bombardment, displacement, and front-line conditions.
Following his death, journalism and press freedom organizations described the attack as part of a broader pattern of escalating risks faced by media workers in active war zones, particularly in Ukraine, where drone warfare has significantly increased the danger to reporters. Advocacy groups have repeatedly warned that journalists documenting the conflict face growing exposure to targeted and indiscriminate strikes.
The Cannes tribute places Lallican among a small number of journalists whose work has been formally recognized at major cultural institutions after being killed in conflict reporting. Festival officials framed the dedication as part of a broader acknowledgment of artistic and journalistic voices lost in recent years, especially in war environments where media personnel operate under extreme risk.
The recognition at Cannes also highlights the intersection between journalism and cultural memory, with Lallican’s work being presented not only as documentation of war, but as part of a wider historical record of the human impact of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.
