Cameroonian journalist Fred Vubem, a seasoned reporter with the Cameroon Tribune, is recovering after a harrowing ordeal that saw him kidnapped, injured, and ultimately escape from his captors. Vubem was abducted on May 4, 2025, in Bambui, a locality in Cameroon’s conflict-hit North West Region, while returning from a visit to his native village, Kedjom Keku.
According to media reports, Vubem was seized by unknown assailants and held overnight. The following day, he managed a daring escape and endured a three-day trek through dense bush terrain in search of safety. Severely injured and exhausted, he was discovered by local farmers who took him to the Bambui District Hospital. Due to the extent of his injuries, particularly a fractured right leg and deep wounds on his buttocks, he was later transferred to the Bamenda Regional Hospital for further treatment and underwent surgery.
Though authorities have yet to confirm the identity or motives of the abductors, Vubem’s kidnapping highlights the escalating threats journalists face in Cameroon, especially in the Anglophone regions, where ongoing conflict between separatist groups and government forces has created a volatile and dangerous environment for the press.
Local journalist unions and press freedom advocates have condemned the attack and called for a swift and transparent investigation. They emphasized the need for better protection measures for media professionals operating in conflict zones, where abductions, harassment, and physical violence have become increasingly common.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the deteriorating state of press freedom in Cameroon. Fred Vubem, known for his commitment to covering social and political issues, has worked in journalism for decades and remains a respected voice in the Cameroonian media landscape.
Despite the physical and emotional trauma, Vubem is said to be in stable condition and recovering post-surgery. Support continues to pour in from colleagues and civil society organizations, who praise his bravery and resilience. His survival is seen not just as a personal triumph but as a powerful testament to the enduring courage of journalists committed to truth, even in the face of grave danger.
