The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has intensified its call for U.S. and international media outlets to condemn the systematic targeting of journalists in Gaza by Israeli forces. This plea follows the tragic death of Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassouna and ten of her family members in an Israeli airstrike on April 16, 2025. Hassouna, renowned for her poignant documentation of civilian life during the Gaza War, was also the subject of a documentary featured at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
CAIR asserts that these attacks are not isolated incidents but part of a broader strategy to suppress critical reporting on the ongoing conflict. The organization emphasizes that journalists, particularly those who are Muslim, Palestinian, or people of color, face disproportionate risks and should receive the same protection and recognition as their counterparts from other backgrounds.
In addition to urging media outlets to amplify the voices of Gaza’s journalists, CAIR highlights the increasing challenges faced by these reporters. Many have been subjected to arrests, threats, and censorship, with some losing their lives while documenting the war. The organization calls for an end to the impunity surrounding these attacks and for greater international efforts to safeguard press freedom in conflict zones.
CAIR’s advocacy underscores the critical role of journalism in conflict zones and the urgent need for global action to protect journalists and uphold the principles of press freedom.
