Israeli Air Strike in Yemen Kills at Least Nine Journalists
September 14, 2025September 14, 2025 – Australia/Palestine –
In Brisbane on Sunday, approximately 400 protesters gathered outside the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) offices in South Bank to draw attention to journalists killed in Gaza. The demonstration, titled “ABC Stop Silencing Palestine – Rally & March,” was organized by Justice for Palestine Magan-djin, a group focused on Palestinian solidarity in the area.
The event began around 2 pm local time, with many attendees wearing “press” vests bearing the names of deceased journalists. One protester handed ABC staff a list of media workers who have died in Gaza. Protesters called on media organisations to intensify reporting on the ongoing conflict as the second anniversary of the war’s outbreak (October 7, 2023) approaches.
According to different reporting bodies, the number of journalist deaths in Gaza since the conflict began varies: the Committee to Protect Journalists reports at least 186 media workers, mostly Palestinian, have been killed. Other sources, like the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, claim a higher figure. Organizers also criticized the ABC, accusing it of providing “lip service for genocide” and failing to sufficiently expose what they say is “Israeli propaganda.”
Another point of dispute raised at the protest was the case of former ABC staffer Antoinette Lattouf, who was sacked in December 2023 over a social media post about Gaza. In June 2025, a court ruled that her dismissal was unfair. Protesters argued this demonstrated ABC’s restrictive social media policy, which they claim suppresses employees’ civil liberties.
The demonstration proceeded from South Bank to Musgrave Park, with police presence for monitoring. Protesters also urged the Brisbane City Council to light the Story Bridge in the colors of the Palestinian flag as a symbol of solidarity.
