Viktoriia Roshchyna, a 27-year-old Ukrainian journalist, dedicated her career to exposing the harsh realities of Russia’s occupation of Ukrainian territories. Her fearless reporting, particularly on the systemic torture and unlawful detention of civilians, led her to the occupied regions of Zaporizhzhia in August 2023. During this trip, she vanished, and her fate remained unknown until April 2024, when Russia confirmed her detention. In October 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defence informed her family of her death in captivity.
Roshchyna’s body was returned to Ukraine in February 2025 as part of a prisoner exchange. Initial forensic examinations revealed signs of extensive torture, including electric burns, stab wounds, and a broken neck. Disturbingly, several internal organs, such as her brain, eyes, and part of her trachea, were missing, suggesting an attempt to conceal the cause of death. These findings have led Ukrainian authorities and international human rights organizations to classify her death as a potential war crime.
Roshchyna’s work was instrumental in uncovering the existence of “black sites”—secret detention facilities where thousands of Ukrainians were reportedly held and tortured. Her investigations provided invaluable insights into the conditions and abuses within these centers. The Forbidden Stories consortium, in collaboration with various media outlets, has continued its work through the “Viktoriia Project,” aiming to document and expose the plight of detainees in Russian-occupied areas.
In recognition of her contributions, Ukrainian lawmakers have appealed to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to posthumously award Roshchyna the title of Hero of Ukraine. This honor would acknowledge her unwavering commitment to truth and justice, even at the cost of her life.
Roshchyna’s tragic end underscores the perilous conditions faced by journalists in conflict zones. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts to uphold press freedom and human rights, serving as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of truth.
