Iraqi Photojournalist Found Dead After Days Missing
July 28, 2025July 28, 2025 – Nigeria –
The body of slain photojournalist Ayobami “Ayo” Aiyepeku was recovered on the evening of July 27 near the WAEC office in Zone 8, Lokoja, Nigeria. Kogi State Police confirmed that Ayobami was likely murdered on the night of July 22 in an office near Government House, allegedly by his colleague, Oluwapelumi Adebayo, who is employed by the Nigerian Correctional Service. The body was found decomposing in a bush after residents reported a foul odour. His remains were deposited at Kogi State Specialist Hospital as authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Police spokesperson SP Williams Aya described the discovery as grim and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. Residents led security personnel to the site, accompanied by the chairman of Lokoja Local Government and other officials. The suspect is alleged to have placed Ayobami’s body in a deep freezer before abandoning it in the bush. Authorities are appealing to the public and the journalist community to provide information that may aid the probe.
Ayobami’s family has made an urgent plea for justice. His elder brother, Timothy Aiyepeku, and uncle, Ibikunle Jide, called on both federal and state authorities to ensure accountability for the killing. They commended the media for ensuring the case received widespread attention and urged ongoing support in pursuing the truth behind the tragedy.
This incident follows the murder of fellow photojournalist John Agada earlier this month, also in Kogi State, prompting widespread condemnation from journalist associations highlighting threats to press safety and solidarity needs within the industry.
The recovery of Ayobami’s body underscores persistent vulnerabilities faced by journalists in Nigeria, even in ostensibly safe working environments. Press freedom advocates are emphasizing the need for transparent investigations, protection of journalists, and systemic reforms to prevent internal betrayal and fatal violence within newsrooms.
