Global Voices Rise: World Mourns and Condemns Killing of Al Jazeera Journalists in Targeted Israeli Strike
August 12, 2025August 12, 2025 – Germany/Palestine –
Mass protests erupted in Berlin following the Israeli drone strike that killed five Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza, including Anas al-Sharif. Demonstrators gathered in the city center, carrying portraits of the slain reporters and chanting slogans condemning what they called the deliberate targeting of media workers. The protests, organised by Palestinian solidarity groups and press freedom advocates, drew hundreds of participants, reflecting the international outrage over the incident.
Footage from the demonstrations showed protesters holding banners demanding justice and accountability, as well as calling for an end to attacks on journalists in conflict zones. The march was marked by emotional speeches, with participants stressing the vital role of journalism in documenting war crimes and human rights violations. Organisers described the killings as an attack not only on the individuals but also on the principles of truth and transparency.
Tensions escalated when German police moved in to disperse the crowd. Videos showed officers shoving protesters onto trains and making several arrests. Witnesses reported that the arrests appeared targeted, with police detaining individuals carrying Palestinian flags or leading chants. Activists condemned the heavy-handed response, claiming it violated the right to peaceful assembly.
The protests in Berlin were part of a broader wave of demonstrations held worldwide. Cities across Europe, the Middle East, and North America saw vigils and marches in solidarity with the victims. In each location, participants emphasised the dangers faced by journalists covering the Gaza conflict and the urgent need for international mechanisms to protect media workers.
Press freedom groups, including the International Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, have called for an independent investigation into the killings. They stressed that attacks on journalists undermine the public’s right to information and embolden perpetrators to act with impunity.
The Berlin protests underscored the growing perception that journalism itself is under siege in modern conflicts. Protesters vowed to continue mobilising until those responsible are held accountable, warning that silence in the face of such attacks sets a dangerous precedent for press freedom everywhere.
