Global News Outlets Demand for Journalist Safety Amid Gaza War
September 1, 2025September 01, 2025 – Palestine/Lebanon –
Beirut’s Martyrs’ Square became a stage for an international day of media action to honor and stand in solidarity with Palestinian journalists relentlessly targeted by lethal Israeli operations amid the ongoing Gaza crisis.
Organized jointly by Lebanese and Palestinian journalists, the demonstration sent a powerful message against the Israeli regime’s campaign of assassinations, bombardments, and sieges aimed at silencing the truth. Protesters carried slogans condemning these acts and demanded the freedom of journalists detained in occupation prisons.
The Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network played an active role, amplifying calls for international journalists and rights defenders to rally against what they describe as war crimes and crimes against humanity conducted by the “genocidal regime”.
Tragically, the event highlighted staggering figures: over 247 journalists have been assassinated by Israeli forces, including notable names such as Anas al‑Sharif, Ismail al‑Ghoul, Hassan Esleih, Hossam Shabat, Wafa al‑Udaini, Maryam Abu Daqqa, and, most recently, Islam Abed, killed on 31 August 2025. Simultaneously, more than 50 Palestinian journalists remain detained, often subjected to torture, starvation, and isolation—a systemic strategy to silence those documenting and exposing the realities of the occupation.
Speeches delivered by key figures, including Awni El‑Kaaki (Lebanese Press Syndicate head), Joseph Kossaifi (Editors’ Syndicate head), and Walid Kilani—speaking for Palestinian journalists—underscored the collective grief and determination. Journalist Wafaa Bahani, who opened the event, declared that “the blood of journalists is not cheap” and reaffirmed: “the truth will not die, no matter how Zionist criminality escalates”.
Charlotte Kates, International Coordinator for Samidoun, lauded the initiative as “a strong message confronting the occupation and its attempts to assassinate the voice of truth.” She called for continued support for imprisoned Palestinian journalists and urged Western media to expose the crimes committed by the Zionist regime and its imperialist backers.
