At the Health Journalism 2025 conference in Los Angeles, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra delivered a compelling message to journalists: “Speak truth to power.” Drawing from his tenure during the Biden administration, Becerra emphasized the critical role of the press in combating misinformation and disinformation, particularly when such falsehoods emanate from governmental sources.
Becerra highlighted several health policy achievements during his time at HHS, including a nearly 27% reduction in drug overdoses in 2024, the implementation of the 988 mental health hotline, and the expansion of affordable health insurance options under the Affordable Care Act. He also noted the introduction of $35 monthly insulin caps for seniors and $2,000 out-of-pocket caps for Medicare recipients.
Addressing the challenges faced by journalists, Becerra urged them to remain vigilant and proactive in their reporting. He stressed the importance of holding those in power accountable and ensuring that the public receives accurate and timely information. “You just have to stand up,” he said, acknowledging the difficulties but underscoring the necessity of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Becerra’s remarks come at a time when the dissemination of health misinformation poses significant risks to public well-being. His call to action serves as a reminder of the indispensable role that journalists play in safeguarding public health and upholding democratic values.
The Health Journalism 2025 conference provided a platform for health care journalists to engage with experts, share insights, and reinforce their commitment to accurate and ethical reporting. Becerra’s address was a highlight of the event, resonating with attendees and reinforcing the vital connection between journalism and public health.
