A compelling new documentary, “Barbara Walters: Tell Me Everything,” directed by Jackie Jesko, chronicles the life and legacy of broadcast legend Barbara Walters. Produced by ABC News Studios, Imagine Documentaries (with Ron Howard & Brian Grazer), and Latchkey Films, it premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12 and begins streaming on Hulu (and Disney+ internationally) on June 23, 2025.
This 95-minute film weaves together archival ABC footage—much of it previously unaired—with fresh interviews featuring Walters’s colleagues and subjects, including Oprah Winfrey, Katie Couric, Cynthia McFadden, Bette Midler, and more. It traces her ascent as a television pioneer: the first female co-anchor on NBC’s Today, ABC Evening News, and later co-creator of The View—a cornerstone of her media influence.
The documentary balances celebration with critique. The first half spotlights her biggest highs—iconic interviews with celebrities, presidents, and global figures—while the latter half explores her challenges: competitive rivalries (e.g., with Diane Sawyer), ethical compromises, strained relationships (notably with her adopted daughter Jacqueline), and complex romantic entanglements.
Notably, Oprah Winfrey reveals in the film that witnessing Walters’s emotionally charged, precarious relationship with her daughter influenced her own decision not to have children. Cynthia McFadden and others also candidly reflect on Walters’s insecurities—her strategic drive, ambition, and the toll of success on her personal life.
Critics offer mixed reviews: The Hollywood Reporter notes the doc’s structure—letting Walters’s methods steer the story—feels “solid but limited” in depth, while Variety praises its “sharp, inquiring” tone that captures both her brilliance and her entanglement with fame, money, and power.
