A case has been filed following a violent attack on at least five journalists in Muradnagar Upazila of Cumilla while they were covering a land dispute. The incident occurred in Bhayna village under the Bangra Bazar Police Station, where a group of men allegedly led by an individual named Delwar launched a physical assault on the media workers, injuring several of them and damaging their equipment.
According to the complaint filed with the police, the journalists had arrived at the location in response to reports of a clash between two families over disputed land. As they began documenting the incident, Delwar and his associates reportedly attacked them without provocation. Witnesses said the attackers used sticks and rods, leaving multiple journalists with injuries to their heads and limbs. Their cameras and mobile phones were also smashed in the assault.
The injured journalists were identified as working with various local news outlets. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they received treatment, with some requiring stitches for head wounds. The incident sparked outrage among the media community in Cumilla, and press organisations across the country condemned the attack, calling it a serious violation of press freedom.
A formal case has been lodged against four named individuals, along with 12 unidentified attackers, under charges of assault, obstruction of duty, and property damage. Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway and promised to bring those responsible to justice. However, as of the time of reporting, no arrests had been made.
The Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) have urged authorities to ensure swift legal action and improved protection for journalists working in the field. They emphasised that reporters must be able to carry out their duties without fear of violence or reprisal.
