Journalists in Bangladesh are facing increasing threats, attacks, and legal pressures, raising serious concerns about press freedom in the country. In early 2025, the situation worsened as reporters were subjected to physical violence and intimidation, with at least 17 journalists attacked in February alone.
A notable incident involved Shohag Khan Sujon, a correspondent for the daily Samakal, who was assaulted with a hammer and stabbed after investigating allegations of medical negligence. Such attacks highlight the dangerous conditions under which journalists operate, especially when reporting on sensitive issues.
Alongside physical violence, the media faces growing legal repression. The interim government has introduced a new Cyber Security Ordinance, which critics say resembles the harsh Digital Security Act of 2018. These laws have been widely condemned for suppressing free speech and enabling authorities to control online content. Human rights organizations warn that the new ordinance could further restrict journalists’ ability to report freely and independently.
In addition, the government revoked the press accreditations of 167 journalists without clear explanations. This move was seen by media watchdogs and the Editors’ Council of Bangladesh as an attempt to intimidate and silence the press. The international community, including groups like the Committee to Protect Journalists and Amnesty International, has voiced concern over these developments and urged the government to respect media freedom.
Despite the challenges, some journalists express cautious optimism. With the end of the long-standing Sheikh Hasina administration, there is hope for reforms that could improve the media environment. However, experts stress that continued vigilance is essential to prevent further erosion of press freedoms under the interim government.
The current climate reveals how fragile journalism remains in Bangladesh, where threats and restrictive laws combine to undermine the vital role of a free press in society. Advocacy and pressure from both domestic and international actors remain critical to safeguarding journalists and protecting freedom of expression.
