On August 16, 2025, Yemeni security forces raided the home of Jamana News Agency journalist Hamoud Hazz’a in Al‑Jufaina camp, Marib Governorate. His mobile phone and laptop were confiscated, and he was taken to an undisclosed location with no legal basis cited. Before the raid, Hazz’a had posted on Facebook that security personnel were stationed outside his home and that the Fourth Security Zone force had forcibly broken down his door, terrifying his family.
Following his arrest, Hazz’a was transferred from political security detention to military prosecution and presented before a military court. Authorities justified this move by citing his registration in the Department of Defense. A security official stated that Hazz’a’s status as a second lieutenant in the National Defense Service Department of the Yemeni Armed Forces warranted the transfer.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the arrest, emphasizing that the manipulation of Hazz’a’s honorary military rank to subject him to military court proceedings is a blatant attempt to silence the media. CPJ’s regional director, Sara Qudah, warned that press freedoms continue to erode in areas controlled by the internationally recognized government and demanded Hazz’a’s immediate release.
The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate highlighted a troubling pattern: many journalists displaced from Houthi‑controlled regions are assigned honorary military ranks or benefits in return for media work. The syndicate urged authorities to stop exploiting these arrangements and to uphold freedom of expression.
Hazz’a had previously alerted press‑freedom organizations, including the Yemen News Agency, that he’d been subjected to online threats and incitement due to his critical commentary on Marib’s local government.
Despite efforts to learn more about his status, CPJ received no response from the Yemeni embassy in Washington regarding Hazz’a’s whereabouts or the charges against him.
