Pakistani authorities have arrested a key suspect in the 2014 killing of journalist Shan Dahar, marking a significant development in a case long emblematic of impunity for crimes against journalists in the country. The arrest has renewed calls for a full reinvestigation into the killing, which remained unresolved for more than a decade.
Police in Larkana confirmed the arrest of Irfan Brohi, an absconding suspect who had been on the run since Dahar was shot dead on January 1, 2014, in the town of Badah. Dahar, who worked for an Urdu-language news channel, had reportedly been investigating the illegal resale of donated medicines at the time of the attack.
According to officials, Brohi was detained during a police raid but was later released after his lawyer secured interim bail. A court will decide whether to uphold or reject the bail in upcoming proceedings, leaving uncertainty over whether the suspect will remain in custody as the case moves forward.
The arrest comes after years of criticism over how the case was handled. Initial investigations classified Dahar’s death as a murder, but authorities later controversially reclassified it as an accidental shooting caused by celebratory gunfire. This shift, along with allegations of evidence mishandling and procedural flaws, has been widely condemned by press freedom groups and investigators.
An earlier investigative report described the case as deeply compromised, pointing to inconsistencies, omissions, and failures by law enforcement that allowed suspects to evade justice for years. Advocacy groups argue that these shortcomings reflect broader systemic issues in prosecuting crimes against journalists in Pakistan.
Press freedom organizations have welcomed the arrest as a potential turning point, but stress that it must lead to meaningful accountability. They are calling for the immediate apprehension of the second absconding suspect and a comprehensive, independent reinvestigation into Dahar’s killing.
Dahar’s murder has long been cited as a stark example of the dangers faced by journalists reporting on corruption and powerful local actors. For advocates, the latest development represents a rare opportunity to correct years of investigative failure and deliver justice in a case that has come to symbolize the broader struggle against impunity in Pakistan.
