Statue, Surveillance, and Suppression: Varanasi Journalists Face FIRs Over Viral Video

Palestinian journalist Ahmad Hasan Saad was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza’s Al‑Tuffah neighborhood, near the Shaaban Al‑Rees School in eastern Gaza City. Iranian outlet MizanOnline cited Shehab News, describing how Israeli airstrikes hit a group of civilians, resulting in 10 deaths and multiple injuries, among them, Saad, who was covering the scene when he was martyred.
Additional details from the Stop Murdering Journalists project—backed by Databases for Palestine—readily identified Saad’s full name: Ahmad Hasan Saad. The group confirmed he was killed on June 27 by mortar or tank fire, alongside his brothers Ali and Alaa, in the same strike. They noted at least eight fatalities and ten wounded in the incident, framing Saad as a casualty within one of the deadliest months for journalists during this ongoing conflict.
Stop Murdering Journalists additionally highlights a grim statistic: 288 journalists have been killed over 632 days since the start of the war on October 7, 2023—marking Gaza as the most hazardous conflict zone for press workers in recent history.
This tragic death is part of a wider campaign of violence against media personnel in Gaza. As of June 12, 2025, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that at least 178 journalists—predominantly Palestinian—have been killed, with around 48 media facilities destroyed by Israeli strikes. UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists further corroborate these numbers, noting a sharp rise in journalist casualties since late 2023.
Saad’s death again draws attention to the brazen threats journalists in Gaza face: covering bombings or evacuations can be fatal, with few safe zones left intact. Press freedom advocates continue insisting on accountability and protection under international humanitarian law. This most recent killing fuels that push, emphasizing the need for global mechanisms to shield journalists—and punish violations—before more frontline eyewitnesses are silenced.
