Wael al-Dahdouh, the Gaza bureau chief for Al Jazeera, has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 2025 Amnesty Media Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on June 4, 2025, at the BFI Southbank in London. The event celebrates exemplary journalism that highlights human rights issues worldwide.
Al-Dahdouh’s selection for this important role highlights his outstanding courage and dedication to press freedom, especially in the face of devastating personal loss. During the 2023–2024 conflict in Gaza, an Israeli airstrike tragically claimed the lives of his wife, children, and grandson. Despite enduring such unimaginable grief, al-Dahdouh remained committed to his work, continuing to report from one of the most dangerous conflict zones in the world.
His fearless journalism and unwavering pursuit of truth have earned him several prestigious honors, including the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) Courage Award and the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate’s Freedom of Press Award. These accolades recognize his vital role in bringing critical stories from Gaza to global audiences under extreme conditions.
The Amnesty Media Awards ceremony will be hosted by actor and director Jolyon Rubinstein and will also be livestreamed, allowing people worldwide to engage with the event. The awards ceremony not only honors journalists like al-Dahdouh but also shines a spotlight on the broader challenges faced by reporters covering human rights abuses, conflict zones, and oppressive regimes.
By choosing al-Dahdouh as the keynote speaker, Amnesty International emphasizes the essential role journalists play in holding power to account and the personal risks many take to ensure the world stays informed. His story of resilience and dedication stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices journalists make in the pursuit of justice and truth.
This ceremony promises to be a significant moment in recognizing and supporting the vital work of human rights journalism around the globe.
