Mohammed Wishah, a correspondent for Al Jazeera Mubasher, has been killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip, according to the Qatari broadcaster and Gaza authorities, marking yet another deadly impact of the ongoing conflict on media workers.
Wishah, who reported for Al Jazeera since 2018 and was based in Gaza City, died on April 8, 2026, after a drone or airstrike struck the vehicle he was traveling in along Al‑Rashid Street, a coastal road west of the city. Media footage and civil defence teams described the car bursting into flames upon impact, and another individual in the vehicle was also killed.
The Gaza Government Media Office stated that the incident brings the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023 to around 262, underscoring the extreme risks faced by reporters covering the conflict and its humanitarian consequences.
In an official statement condemning the killing, Al Jazeera Media Network characterised Wishah’s death as a “deliberate and targeted crime” and a violation of international law, asserting that such attacks form part of a systematic pattern aimed at preventing press coverage of events on the ground and intimidating media professionals. The network reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing legal avenues to hold responsible parties accountable.
The broadcaster also highlighted that Wishah was one among several Al Jazeera journalists previously killed in similar circumstances, including Samer Abu Daqqa, Ismail Al Ghoul, and others, reflecting the heightened danger for media workers in the region.
Local health authorities and civil defence agencies reiterated that the strike occurred amid continued hostilities in Gaza despite a US‑backed ceasefire and warned of ongoing civilian harm. The Israeli military had not immediately responded to requests for comment on the journalist’s death.
Wishah’s killing has reignited international concerns about press safety in conflict zones and sparked calls from media rights groups and advocacy organisations for stronger protections for journalists reporting under hazardous conditions.
