The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK) issued a strong condemnation following verbal assaults and disparaging remarks made by MP Fitore Pacolli against journalist Blerta Foniqi Kabashi. The incidents occurred after Foniqi Kabashi published investigative reporting that covered controversial local infrastructure projects, including allegations of financial irregularities involving public figures.
According to AGK, Fitore Pacolli accused the journalist of defamation and dishonesty in a public posting on social media. Pacolli also questioned Foniqi Kabashi’s integrity and professionalism, implying she benefited personally from political opposition narratives. These actions, AGK leaders say, represent a deliberate attempt to discredit investigative journalism and undermine media accountability mechanisms.
AGK President Arton Elshani stated that public officials must respect press freedom and refrain from personal vilification when journalists expose wrongdoing. He warned that such attacks deter journalists from pursuing hard-hitting reporting and degrade the quality of public debate. Foniqi Kabashi has reported receiving hostile messages online since the politician’s statements appeared, generating concern for her safety and professional standing.
Media advocates call on Kosovo’s parliamentary ethics commission to examine Pacolli’s conduct and formally rebuke any elected official who uses public office to intimidate journalists. They also emphasized that democratic governance requires government actors to engage with scrutiny rather than silence it.
Fitore Pacolli’s remarks reflect a broader pattern of media defamation attempts in the region, where independent journalism plays a vital role in exposing corruption and promoting transparency. AGK urged parliament and judicial bodies to reaffirm their commitment to protecting journalists and to consider legal sanctions for defamation that targets the press.
Blerta Foniqi Kabashi, who contributes to several local outlets, remains active in her reporting despite the controversy. AGK has pledged legal assistance and public support while calling for a safe environment in which journalists can operate without fear.
