After 15 months of displacement due to the ongoing Gaza-Israel conflict, several Palestinian journalists have returned to their homes, confronting both the emotional relief of reuniting with their communities and the overwhelming devastation left by the war.
Among them is Anas Baba, an NPR reporter who remained in Gaza throughout the conflict. Following a ceasefire agreement in January 2025, Baba returned to Gaza City, finding his family home partially damaged but still standing. Despite the relief of returning to a habitable space, Baba described the experience as surreal, highlighting the challenges of rebuilding amidst widespread destruction. He noted the scarcity of resources, mentioning that he had to burn books to cook food, underscoring the dire conditions many face upon returning home.
Similarly, journalist Nedal Hamdouna, who had been displaced seven times during the conflict, made an arduous 11-hour journey back to his hometown of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. Upon arrival, he found his house devoid of walls and his community in ruins. Despite the destruction, Hamdouna expressed a commitment to rebuild, stating, “I will start rebuilding my home brick by brick, wall by wall”.
These accounts reflect the broader experience of many displaced Palestinians returning to northern Gaza. While some find their homes still standing, others face the harsh reality of destruction. The emotional journey of returning home is often tempered by the challenges of rebuilding lives and communities amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The resilience of these journalists and their communities highlights the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people in the face of adversity. Their stories serve as a testament to the human cost of the conflict and the ongoing struggle for peace and stability in the region.
