A new pan‑African coalition, African Journalists Against Genocide (AJAG), has emerged, uniting media professionals from more than 20 African countries to forcefully denounce the systematic targeting and killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. Spearheaded by Nigerian broadcast journalist Ireti Bakare‑Yusuf, the coalition seeks to elevate global awareness, press for justice, and call out Israel’s role in the escalating media crisis inside the enclave.
AJAG’s founding follows the deadly toll of the Gaza war on journalists—over 250 media workers have been killed since October 2023, marking it the deadliest conflict for the press in the 21st century. The coalition emphasizes that these killings attempt to blind the world to unfolding atrocities.
In a unified statement, supported by a video appeal, AJAG accuses Israel of deliberately silencing Palestinian journalists to suppress coverage of the humanitarian catastrophe. The group warns that without the voices of local media, the scale of suffering remains hidden from international view.
Beyond condemnation, AJAG is demanding international accountability—calling on global authorities to implement sanctions against Israel and ensure that violations of press freedom do not go unpunished.
The coalition’s formation has reignited broader discussions about the safety of journalists in Gaza. International bodies and human rights advocates have long warned of impunity surrounding attacks on media workers. Numerous calls have been made for impartial investigations and enforcement of international humanitarian law, which clearly protects journalists as civilians.
In launching AJAG, African journalists are not only amplifying solidarity with their Palestinian peers but are also reinforcing the idea that journalism is not a crime—it is a vital part of bearing witness in times of conflict.
