Alaa Hashim: Palestinian Journalist Killed After Months in Coma
March 15, 2025March 14, 2025 – Azerbaijan –
In Azerbaijan, six journalists from the independent online outlet “Abzas Media,” including editor-in-chief Sevindj Vagifgyzy, are facing trial on charges of foreign currency smuggling. Authorities allege that €40,000 in cash was found at the publication’s office. However, the journalists assert that their arrests are politically motivated, aimed at silencing their investigative reporting on government corruption.
The trial proceedings have been marred by concerns over the treatment of the detained journalists. Initially, they refused to attend court sessions, protesting against being held in cold, smoke-filled rooms and being transported separately to prevent communication. Following these protests, conditions were improved, and the journalists resumed participation in the trial.
International watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned the prosecutions, describing them as politically motivated and calling for the immediate release of the journalists. RwB highlighted the broader context of a crackdown on independent media in Azerbaijan, emphasizing the importance of press freedom and the role of journalists in holding power to account.
The case against “Abzas Media” underscores the challenges faced by independent journalists in Azerbaijan and raises serious concerns about the state of press freedom in the country. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for the protection of journalists and the upholding of fundamental rights.
