Remembering Anna Politkovskaya: A Journalist’s Courage That Still Resonates

Palestinian journalists and press freedom organizations are sounding the alarm as the death toll among media workers in Gaza continues to rise at an unprecedented rate. Since the beginning of Israel’s latest military operations in the territory, dozens of Palestinian journalists have been killed, prompting accusations that they are being deliberately targeted.
According to recent reports, more than 140 Palestinian media workers have lost their lives since October 2023, a number that far surpasses journalist deaths in any conflict in recent memory. Human rights groups and media watchdogs claim that many of these journalists were not caught in crossfire, but rather were targeted in airstrikes or attacks despite being identified as members of the press.
In a recent press conference, surviving journalists described working under constant fear, stating that wearing “PRESS” vests no longer offers protection. Some said their homes and offices had been hit, even after notifying Israeli authorities of their locations. Families of the slain are also speaking out, mourning loved ones who were killed while reporting or sheltering with relatives.
Organizations like Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor and Reporters Without Borders have accused Israel of violating international law by failing to distinguish between combatants and civilians. They argue that the pattern of journalist killings cannot be dismissed as incidental. ENAR (Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor) stated that the international community’s silence and failure to hold Israel accountable have contributed to the continued attacks.
Israel has denied deliberately targeting journalists and maintains that it is aiming at militant infrastructure in its campaign against Hamas. However, critics argue that the number and nature of journalist deaths undermine those claims, especially as no independent investigations have been launched.
The crisis has also highlighted the role of Palestinian journalists as some of the only remaining voices reporting from inside Gaza, where foreign media access is severely limited. Their deaths represent not only a human tragedy but a silencing of vital eyewitness accounts in a war with significant humanitarian consequences.
