Press Freedom in Greece Worsens Amid Surveillance and Political Pressure

The death toll of journalists in Gaza has reached alarming levels, with many media workers caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict. Since the start of the conflict, at least 215 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces, marking the situation in Gaza as one of the deadliest for journalists in recent history. The death of journalists is not just a statistic but an attack on press freedom and the right to report the truth.
In the most recent incident, Palestinian journalist Hassan Islayeh, a prominent field reporter and director of Alam24 news agency, was killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike while receiving treatment in Khan Younis’ Nasser Hospital. This strike is considered a “deliberate assassination,” as Islayeh had already survived a previous attack targeting a media tent last month, which claimed the lives of two other journalists. His death underscores the growing pattern of targeting journalists, even while they are in hospitals or non-combat zones.
The Israeli military justifies its attacks by claiming that Hamas uses civilian infrastructure, such as hospitals and media outlets, for military purposes. However, there is no evidence to support these allegations in the case of Islayeh or many others. International watchdogs and media organizations have condemned these attacks, calling them a violation of international laws that protect journalists in conflict zones.
The impact on the media landscape is profound, as the targeted killings of journalists hinder the ability to report freely and accurately. In a region already suffering from political and humanitarian crises, these attacks exacerbate the suffering, making it even more difficult for the international community to understand the full extent of the human toll in Gaza.
As the death toll continues to rise, global leaders and institutions must demand accountability and protect the rights of journalists, who play an essential role in shedding light on the realities of war.
