On World Press Freedom Day, over 50 media organizations worldwide issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza and the West Bank, which have resulted in the deaths of more than 200 journalists since October 2023. The statement emphasizes that true press freedom cannot exist amid such violence and calls for an immediate end to what they describe as a genocidal assault on Palestinian territories.
The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate reported that 210 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the last 17 months, with hundreds more wounded or having lost family members. Additionally, 55 journalists remain detained in Israeli prisons out of 177 arrested since October 7, 2023. The syndicate accuses Israel of committing “the most horrific media genocide in history” and urges immediate international action to protect media freedom and hold Israeli leaders accountable for crimes against media personnel.
The joint statement also highlights the suppression of press freedom on digital platforms, where content mentioning terms like “Zionist,” “genocide,” and “Palestine” is reportedly censored or deleted. The signatories call on journalists, media outlets, and people of conscience to uphold and defend true press freedom by continuing to report on Israel’s actions in the Palestinian territories.
