On World Press Freedom Day, May 3, 2025, international organizations and advocacy groups highlighted the alarming rise in journalist imprisonments worldwide, calling for immediate action to protect press freedom.
In the United States, press freedom has reached a historic low, now categorized as “problematic” by Reporters Without Borders. This decline reflects broader global trends, with more than half the world’s population living in countries with little or no press freedom, where practicing journalism is increasingly dangerous.
In the Middle East, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, journalists face unprecedented threats. In 2024, a record number of journalists were killed, with nearly two-thirds being Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
In Afghanistan, the United Nations has called for the immediate release of detained journalists, noting that since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, media professionals have increasingly faced arrests, intimidation, and violence.
The international community continues to advocate for the protection of journalists and the upholding of press freedom as a fundamental human right. On this World Press Freedom Day, the urgent call is clear: safeguard the voices that hold power to account and ensure that journalism can thrive without fear or repression.
