Palestine has been named the most dangerous region globally for journalists, according to the 2025 World Press Freedom Index from Reporters Without Borders (RSF). The conflict in Gaza has led to a surge in journalist fatalities, with nearly 200 deaths reported over the past 18 months, 42 of which occurred while journalists were on duty. RSF has condemned the Israeli military for deliberately targeting journalists, highlighting the dire conditions media workers face in Gaza, including shortages of food and water, and the constant threat of attack.
In addition to the physical dangers in Gaza, journalists in the West Bank also face ongoing harassment and violence from Israeli settlers and military personnel. The situation has worsened since the outbreak of violence on October 7, 2023, with an alarming rise in arrests and a persistent lack of accountability for crimes committed against the press. International bodies such as the United Nations have denounced the killing of journalists as potential war crimes, calling for thorough investigations.
The report also reveals a broader global trend of declining press freedom, which RSF attributes to the economic challenges faced by media organizations and the rise of authoritarian regimes worldwide. RSF calls for urgent action to protect journalists in conflict zones and preserve press freedom.
The situation in Gaza highlights the critical need for international intervention to safeguard journalists and uphold the fundamental right to a free press, particularly in regions of intense conflict. The global response to these challenges will be pivotal in shaping the future of press freedom and the safety of journalists.
