The harrowing murder of Indonesian journalist Rico Sempurna Pasaribu and his family in June 2024 continues to spark outrage and calls for justice. Pasaribu, a reporter for Tribrata TV known for covering illegal gambling and drug trafficking, was killed in a targeted arson attack in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. The attack also claimed the lives of his wife and three young children, prompting national condemnation and raising grave concerns over press freedom and journalist safety in Indonesia.
Three suspects were found guilty in March 2025 by the Kabanjahe District Court. Bebas Ginting and Yunus Saputra were sentenced to life imprisonment, while Rudi Apri Sembiring received a 20-year sentence. However, prosecutors are appealing the verdicts, demanding the death penalty for all three. They argue that the attack was clearly premeditated and deserved harsher punishment to serve as a deterrent. The severity of the crime—murdering an entire family in their home—has intensified public scrutiny of the legal outcome.
The case has become even more controversial following allegations of military involvement. The Medan Legal Aid Foundation (LBH) and the North Sumatra Committee for the Safety of Journalists (KKJ) submitted evidence suggesting that First Corporal HB, a member of the Indonesian Army, may have played a role in the murder. The military police have launched an internal investigation into these claims, though details remain limited.
Human rights organizations and press freedom advocates are demanding a thorough and transparent inquiry into both the civilian and possible military involvement. They stress that the murder of Pasaribu was not just an attack on one man, but on the broader principle of press freedom in a democratic society.
As the legal process unfolds, the chilling effect on investigative journalism in Indonesia is undeniable. The Pasaribu case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly risks journalists face and the urgent need for stronger protections and accountability. Justice for Rico Pasaribu is not just about punishing those responsible—it is about preserving the integrity and safety of journalism in Indonesia.
