From April 9 to 11, 2025, the European Parliament’s Info Hub in Brussels hosted a poignant photo exhibition titled Imprisoned Freedom, dedicated to Ukrainian journalists unlawfully detained by Russian authorities. Organized by NGO Integrity UA, the Mission of Ukraine to the EU, the Institute of Mass Information, and media platform Promote Ukraine, with support from the International Renaissance Foundation, the exhibition aimed to shed light on the challenges faced by media professionals in occupied territories.
The exhibition featured powerful narratives and images of at least 30 Ukrainian journalists currently held in Russian captivity, as reported by the Institute of Mass Information. These individuals, many of whom are civic journalists from Crimea, have been targeted for their commitment to reporting the truth amidst ongoing conflicts and occupation.
A central figure in the exhibition was Viktoria Roshchyna, a young journalist who tragically died under torture while in Russian detention. Her story, among others, underscores the severe risks faced by journalists in conflict zones and the dire consequences of suppressing press freedom.
The opening event on April 9 featured remarks from prominent figures, including Pina Picierno, Vice-President of the European Parliament; Sebastião Bugalho, Member of the European Parliament; Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Expression; Oksana Dyakun, Deputy Representative of Ukraine to the EU; Julie Majerczak, Head of the Brussels Office of Reporters Without Borders; and Iryna Zemlyana, Media Expert at the Institute for Mass Information.
Imprisoned Freedom served not only as a tribute to the courage and resilience of Ukrainian journalists but also as a call to action for the international community to advocate for their release and to uphold the principles of press freedom and human rights.
