The killing of journalist Allah Dino Shar in Thari Mirwah, Khairpur district, Sindh, has sparked widespread outrage and protests across the region. Shar, who worked for Hum News, was found dead on April 10, 2025, in an open field, bearing multiple wounds caused by a sharp weapon. His murder has been described by colleagues and rights advocates as a targeted attack, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by journalists in Pakistan.
Soon after the discovery of Shar’s body, journalists in Khairpur and surrounding towns, including Kumb, Gambat, Ranipur, and Pir-Jo-Got, staged rallies demanding justice. Protesters criticized law enforcement for failing to protect media workers and called for a thorough, transparent investigation into the killing.
In response to the public outcry, Khairpur Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Samiullah Soomro launched an investigation that led to the arrest of five suspects. Among those detained was Niaz Badami, identified as the main accused, along with Waqas, Faheem, Ahad, and Naeem Channa. Police recovered key evidence, including the murder weapon, a large knife, and the victim’s mobile phone and glasses. Authorities revealed that one of Shar’s acquaintances had allegedly paid the attackers to carry out the murder, suggesting the crime may have been premeditated and motivated by a personal or professional dispute.
Police sources stated that the arrested suspects confessed to their involvement in the killing. Despite the arrests, the journalist community continues to press for greater accountability, fearing that the broader culture of impunity surrounding attacks on the press in Pakistan will persist unless there is sustained pressure and judicial action.
Shar’s murder adds to a growing list of threats and violence against journalists in Pakistan, a country where media freedom is frequently undermined by intimidation, censorship, and lethal force. Rights groups have called on both federal and provincial authorities to ensure the safety of media professionals and to hold those responsible for crimes against journalists fully accountable under the law. The case remains under investigation.
