On March 28, 2025, veteran photojournalist Suresh Rajak was tragically killed while covering a pro-monarchy protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu. Rajak, head of the camera division at Avenues Television, was documenting the demonstration when protesters set fire to a building he had entered. Trapped inside, he was unable to escape and succumbed to the flames.
The protest, organized by royalist supporters, escalated into violence, with demonstrators clashing with police and targeting media outlets. Protesters accused occupants of the building of being police officers, leading to the arson attack that claimed Rajak’s life.
Rajak’s death has sparked outrage among journalists and press freedom organizations. The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) and the Nepal Press Union (NPU) condemned the killing and demanded a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) also expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the increasing dangers faced by journalists in Nepal. PEC representative Nava Thakuria noted that Rajak is the first journalist killed in Nepal in 2025, underscoring the urgent need for measures to protect media workers.
In response to the tragedy, journalists across Kathmandu staged protests, demanding accountability and enhanced safety for media professionals. The incident has reignited concerns about press freedom in Nepal and the risks journalists face while reporting on politically charged events.
Authorities have launched an investigation into Rajak’s death, but as of now, no arrests have been made. The media community continues to call for swift action to ensure justice and prevent future attacks on journalists.
