Nepali Journalist Burned Alive Amid Pro-Monarchy Protests
March 31, 2025March 29, 2025 – Nepal –
On March 28, 2025, a pro-monarchy rally in Kathmandu, Nepal, turned violent, leading to the deaths of journalist Suresh Rajak and protester Sabin Maharjan. The demonstration, organized by supporters of former King Gyanendra Shah, escalated into clashes with police, resulting in widespread chaos and destruction.
Thousands gathered in the Tinkune area, demanding the restoration of the monarchy and Nepal’s status as a Hindu state. Tensions rose when protesters breached police barricades, prompting security forces to deploy tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. In response, demonstrators set fire to buildings, including media offices, and vandalized property. Amid the turmoil, Rajak, a video journalist, was trapped in a burning building and succumbed to his injuries. Maharjan died from a gunshot wound sustained during the clashes.
The violence resulted in at least 30 injuries and the arrest of over 100 individuals. Authorities imposed a curfew in affected areas and deployed the army to restore order. The incident has drawn condemnation from various quarters, with calls for a thorough investigation into the deaths and the circumstances surrounding the rally.
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has demanded a high-level probe into Rajak’s death, highlighting the increasing threats faced by media personnel in Nepal. Since 1999, 38 journalists have been killed in the country, underscoring the need for enhanced protections for press freedom.
The pro-monarchy movement has gained momentum amid public dissatisfaction with political instability and governance issues. While supporters advocate for a constitutional monarchy coexisting with democracy, critics argue that the recent violence undermines the legitimacy of their cause. The government faces mounting pressure to address the underlying grievances fueling such demonstrations while ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens.
