On April 6, 2025, Palestinian journalist Islam Nasr al-Din Muqaddad was killed in an Israeli airstrike that struck her home in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. Her husband and son also lost their lives in the same attack. Muqaddad’s death adds to a growing number of journalists who have been killed during Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, which began in October 2023. She became the 254th journalist or media worker reported dead since the conflict started, and the 127th killed in their own home.
The day following Muqaddad’s death, another Israeli airstrike reportedly targeted a media tent near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The attack killed at least two people, including journalist Helmi al-Faqawi, and left several others injured. The strike destroyed the tent used by journalists to cover developments near the hospital and has been condemned as another blow to press freedom in the besieged region.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other international watchdogs have expressed alarm over the scale of journalist casualties in Gaza. According to CPJ, Israel has killed more journalists in this short time than any military force in recent history. They have called the situation the deadliest for media workers ever recorded, emphasizing the apparent targeting of journalists even in spaces marked for media personnel or in private residences.
Press freedom advocates argue that the death toll cannot be dismissed as collateral damage and have urged international bodies to investigate potential violations of international law. They point out that journalists are critical in documenting wartime conditions and human rights abuses and must be protected under international humanitarian frameworks.
As Israel’s military operations continue, the environment for media workers in Gaza grows increasingly dangerous. Many journalists have been forced to flee or work under extreme conditions, often without safety gear, electricity, or reliable communication. The deaths of Muqaddad and others underscore the urgent need for stronger protections for journalists in conflict zones and accountability for violations that endanger their lives.
