A wave of online harassment targeted prominent Filipino women journalists covering former President Rodrigo Duterte’s ongoing trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The attacks, widely condemned by civil society groups, were primarily aimed at reporters Mariz Umali (GMA-7), Zen Hernandez (ABS-CBN), and Gretchen Ho (News5), all of whom have been reporting on the sensitive developments surrounding Duterte’s alleged human rights violations during his administration’s drug war.
These journalists faced a barrage of misogynistic and defamatory comments on social media, many of which were amplified by Duterte supporters. In one disturbing instance, broadcaster Ramon Tulfo made inappropriate and objectifying remarks about Mariz Umali, suggesting she gained access to stories through personal favors—a claim that was baseless and offensive. Such comments echoed a broader trend of gendered attacks that attempt to discredit the credibility and professionalism of women in journalism, especially when they report on contentious political matters.
Women’s rights group Gabriela was quick to denounce these incidents. Representative Arlene Brosas emphasized that these gender-based attacks mirror the culture of misogyny fostered during Duterte’s presidency. She warned that this pattern of disinformation and character assassination is meant to silence women who dare to hold power to account. Brosas called for increased support and protection for women journalists, as well as accountability for those spreading online abuse.
The International Association of Women in Radio and Television (IAWRT) – Philippines also raised alarm over the pattern of intimidation. They noted that these forms of harassment are not only attacks on individual journalists but also on press freedom and the public’s right to information. According to the group, the coverage of Duterte’s ICC case is in the public interest, and efforts to suppress it through online violence must be condemned.
The situation underscores the increasingly dangerous climate for journalists in the Philippines, especially women, who continue to face harassment and threats for doing their jobs.
