In October 2024, journalist Karishma Patel resigned from the BBC, citing deep concerns over the broadcaster’s coverage of the Gaza conflict and its handling of stories involving Palestinian civilians. Patel, who had served as a Middle East specialist and newsreader for five years, publicly disclosed her reasons for leaving in March 2025, highlighting what she perceived as a pattern of editorial bias and institutional failure.
A pivotal moment for Patel was the BBC’s response to the tragic death of a five-year-old Palestinian girl, Hind Rajab. Trapped in a car with her deceased relatives, Rajab’s plight was widely reported by international media. Patel had pitched the story twice, urging the BBC to cover it while Rajab was still alive. However, the network declined to report on it until after her death, when Israeli forces had fired approximately 300 rounds at the vehicle. Even then, the BBC’s coverage was criticized for its language, using terms like “found dead” instead of “killed,” and for including statements that some interpreted as justifying the actions of the Israeli military.
Further fueling Patel’s decision was the BBC’s withdrawal of the documentary “Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone,” which featured a 13-year-old narrator. The BBC cited concerns over the child’s familial connections to a Hamas official. Patel and other critics viewed this move as capitulating to external pressures and failing to uphold journalistic integrity.
In her resignation, Patel accused the BBC of avoiding “reasonable, evidence-based conclusions” regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, suggesting that the broadcaster had become a “vehicle in informational warfare”. She emphasized that her departure was driven by a commitment to ethical journalism and a refusal to be complicit in what she saw as a failure to accurately report on the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
Following her resignation, Patel joined the Britain Palestine Media Centre as a Senior Social Media Engagement Officer, continuing her advocacy for balanced and humane reporting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
