March 17, 2025March 17, 2025 – Indonesia –
In a significant legal development, Indonesian prosecutors are appealing for the death penalty against three individuals convicted of the premeditated murder of journalist Rico Sempurna Pasaribu and his family in Karo Regency, North Sumatra. The initial verdicts, delivered by the Kabanjahe District Court on March 27, 2025, sentenced two of the defendants to life imprisonment and the third to 20 years in prison.
The North Sumatra Prosecutors’ Office filed the appeal, arguing that the severity of the crime, resulting in the deaths of Pasaribu, his wife, child, and grandchild, warrants the maximum penalty under Indonesian law. The defendants were found guilty of violating Article 340 of the Indonesian Criminal Code, which pertains to premeditated murder.
Pasaribu, a journalist for Tribrata TV, was known for his investigative reporting on illegal gambling and drug activities in the region. His work is believed to have made him a target, leading to the fatal arson attack on his home on June 27, 2024.
The case has drawn national and international attention, highlighting concerns about the safety of journalists in Indonesia and the challenges they face when reporting on sensitive issues. The appeal by the prosecutors underscores the government’s stance on seeking justice for crimes against journalists and their families.
As the legal proceedings continue, the outcome of the appeal will be closely watched by press freedom advocates and human rights organizations, who view the case as a litmus test for Indonesia’s commitment to protecting journalists and upholding justice.
