A female journalist was gang-raped in an under-construction building in the Barontek area of Pallabi, Dhaka. The victim, a reporter for a Dhaka-based daily, was allegedly lured to the location under the pretext of covering illegal activities. She was held captive overnight and subjected to assault before being rescued the following morning. Police arrested two suspects, Enamul Haque (38) and Hamidur Rahman (50), both caretakers of nearby buildings, in connection with the incident. A case was filed naming eight individuals, with an additional eight unidentified suspects.
The victim was admitted to the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she received medical attention and underwent necessary tests. Dr. Sabina Yasmin, the centre’s coordinator, confirmed her stable condition but noted that further statements would be premature. The journalist has expressed intentions to hold a press conference demanding the highest punishment for the perpetrators.
This incident has drawn attention to the broader issue of violence against journalists in Bangladesh. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), there have been numerous cases of harassment, arbitrary detention, and legal actions against journalists, particularly those perceived as critical of the government. The CPJ has expressed deep concern over these developments, urging the government to uphold press freedom and ensure the safety of journalists.
The arrest of the two suspects marks a step toward justice, but the case remains under investigation. Authorities have yet to disclose whether additional arrests are anticipated. The incident underscores the challenges faced by journalists in Bangladesh and the need for continued efforts to protect press freedom and hold perpetrators accountable
