The death of 82-year-old C. Pappachan, a retired assistant general manager of BSNL, was initially deemed a tragic hit-and-run accident near Asramam Ground in Kollam, Kerala. However, subsequent investigations revealed a calculated murder orchestrated to appear as an accident.
Pappachan, known for his frugal lifestyle despite considerable wealth, had minimal contact with his family and often cycled around the city. His financial prudence and slight memory issues attracted the attention of Saritha, a branch manager at Muthoottu Mini Nidhi, and her associate Anoop. They persuaded him to deposit approximately ₹80 lakh with their branch, later coercing him into taking loans under the pretense of higher returns, ultimately siphoning off his funds.
As Pappachan grew suspicious of the financial discrepancies, Saritha and Anoop conspired to eliminate him. They hired Animon, a known criminal, to stage a fatal accident. On the day of the incident, Animon struck Pappachan with a car, and an autorickshaw driver named Mahin, who transported the injured Pappachan to the hospital, was later found to be part of the conspiracy.
Inspector Anil Kumar, leading the investigation, grew suspicious due to Animon’s criminal background. Detailed analysis of call records revealed interactions between Animon and employees of the financial institution, along with financial transactions linking them. Further scrutiny uncovered that the car used in the incident was owned by Hashif Ali, who was also implicated in the crime.
The case underscores the importance of meticulous investigation and the need for vigilance in financial dealings, especially concerning vulnerable individuals. It also highlights how initial appearances can be deceptive, necessitating thorough scrutiny in such incidents.
