UNESCO has launched a call for proposals aimed at strengthening freedom of expression and journalist safety in Somalia, where media workers face persistent threats from conflict, political instability, and targeted violence. Announced on January 13, 2025, the initiative will fund projects with a total budget of US$ 35,000 and run from the second to the fourth quarter of 2025.
The call supports organizations capable of implementing practical, locally grounded activities to enhance protection for journalists—particularly women—and promote institutional engagement around media safety. Interested applicants must submit proposals by January 31, 2025.
Eligible applicants must demonstrate proven experience in media development, journalist protection, or human rights advocacy, ideally with operational presence or partnerships in Somalia. Proposals must include a detailed methodology, budget, timeline, and team qualifications.
This initiative aligns with UNESCO’s broader mandate to advance Sustainable Development Goal 16.10 and the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists. Somalia remains one of the most dangerous countries in the world for media professionals, where impunity for violence against journalists is widespread and state protection is limited.
UNESCO’s targeted support aims to equip journalists with tools for survival and resilience while encouraging local authorities and communities to actively safeguard press freedom. The project will prioritize activities that address both physical and digital safety challenges, increase awareness of legal protections, and foster collaboration among key stakeholders such as civil society, media organizations, and local governments.
By promoting structured responses to violence and harassment against journalists, UNESCO hopes to help build a more secure and sustainable media environment in Somalia. The initiative underscores the urgent need for international and local cooperation to protect journalists who risk their lives to report from conflict zones and fragile democracies.
Interested organizations are encouraged to contact UNESCO’s program officer, Lea Simonini, for full application details and submission guidelines.
