British journalist Dom Phillips, who was tragically killed in the Brazilian Amazon alongside Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira in June 2022, will have his final investigative work, How to Save the Amazon: A Journalist’s Fatal Quest for Answers, published in May 2025. The book, a culmination of Phillips’s research plotting solutions to deforestation and environmental degradation, was completed posthumously by a team of close colleagues and his widow, Alessandra Sampaio.
Phillips focused on uncovering sustainable approaches to preserve the world’s largest rainforest, covering topics like agroforestry, bioeconomy, ecotourism, and Indigenous stewardship. He traveled deep into the Javari Valley, Brazil’s remote border region, documenting criminal activities such as illegal fishing, mining, logging, and drug trafficking. Phillips intended his book to be a proactive exploration of solutions, not merely exposing problems.
At the time of his murder on June 5, 2022, Phillips had completed an introduction and roughly four of ten planned chapters, leaving behind extensive notes, outlines, and handwritten field notebooks. Handling such raw material was emotionally challenging for co-authors, who aimed to preserve Phillips’s voice and integrity while navigating their grief. Guardian environmental editor Jonathan Watts led the effort, supported by other contributors who penned chapters aligned with Phillips’s unfinished vision. Indigenous activist Beto Marubo contributed a reflective afterword.
How to Save the Amazon launches simultaneously in the UK, Brazil, and the U.S. (starting May 31 in the UK/Brazil; June 10 in the U.S.). Its release coincides with broader memorial projects honoring Phillips and Pereira’s legacy—an Amazon-themed podcast by The Guardian and Indigenous-rooted conservation initiatives .
