Iranian journalist and documentary filmmaker Mehrdad Aladin was detained in Tehran’s Evin Prison after responding to a summons from the Shahi Moghadas preliminary court. Aladin, who works for the Didban Iran news website and is known for covering social and environmental issues, was arrested without formal charges being announced. His sudden detention sparked concern among press freedom advocates and international human rights organizations.
Aladin’s arrest is widely viewed as part of a broader crackdown on independent journalism and documentary filmmaking in Iran. His work often explored sensitive topics such as environmental degradation and societal injustice—subjects that have increasingly drawn the ire of Iranian authorities. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned his arrest, describing it as arbitrary and aimed at silencing voices that challenge the official narrative. CPJ also called for Aladin’s immediate and unconditional release.
Adding to the political undertones of the case is Aladdin’s family connection to the media. His brother, Koroush Aladin, is a journalist with the U.S.-based VOA Persian service. Advocates fear that Mehrdad’s detention may be part of a broader strategy to intimidate journalists both inside and outside the country.
After nearly two weeks in custody, Aladin was released on bail—reportedly equivalent to about USD 12,500. However, his legal status remains uncertain, as no charges have been officially filed, and he may still face trial under Iran’s vague national security laws, which are frequently used to suppress dissent.
Evin Prison, where Aladin was held, is notorious for housing political prisoners, journalists, and activists. It has long been associated with human rights abuses, including extended solitary confinement and denial of legal representation.
Aladdin’s case highlights the growing dangers faced by Iranian journalists and filmmakers. With at least six other media figures currently convicted or detained, Iran’s press freedom climate continues to deteriorate. International observers and rights groups have urged Iranian authorities to halt the repression of media professionals and uphold their obligations under international human rights law to protect freedom of expression.
