South Korean Journalists Recall a Night Under Martial Law

In the wake of violent crackdowns on journalists during pro-European protests in Georgia, international media organizations and press freedom advocates have rallied in solidarity with the country’s embattled media. Statements from the International Press Institute (IPI), the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), and over 80 prominent editors and journalists across 48 countries denounce the Georgian government’s escalating attacks on press freedom.
Between November 28 and December 10, 2024, more than 90 journalists were assaulted, harassed, or detained while covering mass protests in Tbilisi. Many were visibly marked as press, yet were deliberately targeted by security forces using batons, rubber bullets, and tear gas. Equipment was seized, footage deleted, and live broadcasts interrupted. Independent journalists like Mzia Amaglobeli were arrested and charged under what observers described as politically motivated accusations.
IPI condemned this as part of a systematic effort to stifle dissenting voices, especially during periods of political unrest. In a joint letter, journalists from outlets including Le Monde, El País, The Guardian, and The Washington Post expressed “deep alarm” over the government’s attempts to silence the press and urged Georgian authorities to uphold international commitments to media freedom.
ECPMF and its Media Freedom Rapid Response partners warned that the situation reflects a dangerous democratic backslide. They highlighted how new legislative tools—such as “foreign agent” laws and tightened media regulations—are being weaponized to criminalize independent journalism. These legal threats complement the physical violence witnessed during the protests, forming a dual-pronged attack on press freedom.
Local coalitions like MediaCoalition.ge added their voice, calling for the unconditional release of detained journalists and the end of politically driven prosecutions. They emphasized the courage of reporters who, despite immense pressure, continue to document protests and government abuses.
The international response underscores a powerful message: the global journalism community will not remain silent. The crackdown on Georgian media is not an isolated event but part of a broader pattern threatening democratic norms. As solidarity deepens, pressure mounts on Georgian authorities to halt their repression, release imprisoned journalists, and recommit to the principles of a free and independent press.
