Lebanese media veteran Ali Hassan Ashour, a journalist with Al‑Nour Radio, was killed during an Israeli military operation in southern Lebanon amid the ongoing Israel–Hezbollah conflict that began on October 8, 2023. Al‑Nour Radio confirmed his death today, referring to him as a “martyr” of Israeli aggression.
Although details remain scarce—the exact date, time, and location of the strike were not released—multiple credible sources align in reporting that Ashour died amid renewed Israeli bombardments targeting Hezbollah positions. His death brings to ten the number of journalists known to have been killed by Israeli military actions in Lebanon since October 2023.
This incident underscores the persistent and high-risk environment journalists face in southern Lebanon. Israeli tank and aerial fire have repeatedly struck near journalistic teams identified by media markings. According to United Nations and press watchdog reports, there have been deliberate or negligent attacks that have killed or wounded at least ten journalists and injured many more.
Ashour’s death follows the November 2024 killing of Lebanese reporter Sakina Mansour from al‑Nour Radio, also by Israeli strike, and a string of similar incidents in which media personnel—such as those from Al‑Mayadeen, Reuters, AFP, Al‑Jazeera, and Al‑Manar—have lost their lives or suffered injuries.
Journalists’ death toll in Lebanon is part of a larger pattern affecting Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and Gaza’s border regions, as news crews continue to document frontline action. Organizations like Reporters Without Borders and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon have flagged these attacks as possible war crimes, emphasizing that identifiable journalists were struck despite clear press markings.
In summary, Ali Hassan Ashour’s death—a “martyr” to Al‑Nour—adds to the mounting human cost borne by those bearing witness in conflict zones. The incident highlights the urgent need for stronger protections, accountability mechanisms, and international oversight to safeguard press personnel operating under fire.
