Amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza, international journalism organizations have united to spotlight the plight of Palestinian journalists and demand urgent protective measures. This global movement reflects growing concern over the deliberate targeting of media professionals amid Israel’s military operations.
The Palestinian Information Center reported on November 17, 2024, that leading journalists in Gaza have intensified their reporting, spotlighting humanitarian crises such as hospital strikes and mass displacement. They emphasized the importance of keeping global attention on civilian suffering and Israel’s military tactics—a vital form of resistance against attempts to suppress these realities.
On May 21, 2025, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliates issued a powerful condemnation of Israel’s actions, highlighting the alarming death toll of at least 164 Palestinian journalists since October 7, 2023. The IFJ denounced the ongoing bombardment and starvation tactics, describing them as deliberate assaults that threaten not only the press but the broader civilian population. They specifically demanded unrestricted access for foreign journalists to Gaza, arguing that press coverage is essential to exposing rights violations.
Leading IFJ chapters have launched solidarity initiatives to support Palestinian media workers. In Slovenia, journalists appealed to global political leaders to intervene and halt what they called “crimes against humanity.” Meanwhile, the U.S. National Writers Union organized a Brooklyn fundraiser to assist the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS) with protective gear, equipment, and medical aid. Similarly, France’s Syndicat National des Journalistes partnered with the IFJ to fundraise for bulletproof vests, cameras, and first-aid kits.
These collective efforts underscore a broader resistance: journalism is not a luxury in conflict zones—it is a lifeline that documents abuses and fuels accountability. IFJ emphasized, “Journalists must not stay silent in the face of grave human rights violations”.
Through coordinated campaigns, fundraising events, and global advocacy, the journalism community is transforming solidarity into action, equipping media professionals with essential resources and amplifying calls for international oversight and humanitarian corridors. Their efforts send a clear message: silencing journalists is tantamount to silencing suffering, and they will not be silenced.
