Shot for Reporting: Two Al Jazeera Cameramen Critically Wounded in Gaza
October 10, 2024October 09, 2024 – Palestine/Israel –
Al Jazeera Media Network released a press statement sharply criticizing Israeli Occupation Forces for the deliberate targeting of its journalists in Gaza. The escalation began with the shooting of two cameramen—Ali al‑Attar and Fadi al‑Wahidi—in different parts of northern Gaza. Al‑Wahidi sustained a neck wound while covering a military assault in Jabalia camp, and two days prior, al‑Attar was injured while documenting displaced civilians in Deir al‑Balah. The network stated that these were “grave violations” of journalistic safety and international law.
Al Jazeera rejected Israeli military claims, labeling six of its reporters as “terrorists” linked to Hamas or Islamic Jihad. The network called these accusations “fabricated” and warned that they are being used to justify violence against journalists operating in Gaza . These allegations followed earlier claims stemming from a controversial Israeli military report, which the network says was disseminated to obscure the true nature of the attacks on press staff.
In its condemnation, Al Jazeera emphasized that its teams, identifiable by press markings, were performing their duties amidst ongoing bombardments, and that these reports are coming from “the few remaining journalists” in Gaza’s north. The network warned that targeting journalists not only violates the Geneva Conventions but also intentionally suppresses independent coverage of civilian suffering under siege.
The attack against Al‑Jazeera teams fits within a broader pattern: since October 2023, Al Jazeera has lost several reporters—including Shireen Abu Akleh (2022), Samer Abu Daqqa, Hamza Al Dahdouh, Ismail Al Ghoul, and Ahmed Al‑Louh—while six more were shuttered from operating in Israel-controlled zones.
The network called on the international community to intervene urgently, demanding protection for journalists and accountability for what it described as repeated crimes against the press in Gaza. The statement underscored the chilling effect such actions have on the flow of information and warned of repercussions for press freedom globally, unless independent investigations are launched.
