Nigerian journalist and media strategist Enyinnaya Appolos has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Obingwa West State Constituency seat ahead of the 2027 Abia State House of Assembly elections, marking his formal entry into frontline politics after years in journalism and political communications.
Appolos, a former political correspondent for The Nation and Nigerian Compass newspapers, secured the PDP ticket for the constituency in Abia State and pledged to approach the upcoming election with seriousness and discipline. Speaking after his nomination, he stressed that he would not underestimate rival candidates or political parties during the campaign period.
The journalist-turned-politician said he understands the demands of the race and described his candidacy as both a responsibility and a challenge requiring preparation, strategic planning, and engagement with voters across the constituency. According to him, the party’s decision to entrust him with the ticket would motivate him to work harder in the months leading up to the election.
Appolos previously served as Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, a role that increased his visibility within the state’s political environment. Supporters within the PDP described his emergence as part of efforts to present candidates with media experience and public communication skills ahead of the next electoral cycle.
In his remarks, Appolos said the campaign should not be viewed solely as an effort to win political office but also as an opportunity to provide effective representation for residents of Obingwa West. He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP and said he remained committed to the party’s political agenda and long-term goals in Abia State.
The development comes as political parties in Nigeria gradually begin positioning candidates and strengthening local structures ahead of the 2027 general elections. Analysts say early declarations and nominations are becoming increasingly common as parties attempt to consolidate support well before official campaigns begin.
Appolos’ transition from journalism into electoral politics reflects a broader trend in Nigeria where media professionals and political advisers move directly into public office contests after years working within political communication networks. Observers say his media background could play a significant role in shaping his public image and campaign strategy as preparations for the election continue across Abia State.
