Italian journalist Alessandro Mantovani has accused Israeli forces of physically assaulting activists and journalists after the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in international waters, adding to growing allegations of abuse and mistreatment during the operation. Mantovani, who was among hundreds of activists detained after Israeli forces seized the vessels, said detainees were beaten, humiliated, and subjected to harsh treatment while in custody.
The flotilla, organized by the Global Sumud Flotilla coalition, was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s blockade of the territory. Israeli naval forces intercepted the convoy of vessels in international waters before towing activists and journalists to Israeli ports for detention and deportation proceedings.
According to Mantovani, Israeli personnel beat several detainees during the interception and later mistreated them inside detention facilities. He claimed activists were insulted, restrained, denied adequate treatment, and subjected to degrading conditions. Mantovani said the abuse occurred because governments in Europe continued protecting Israel politically and diplomatically despite repeated allegations of violations against activists and civilians.
Additional allegations emerged from activists interviewed by international media organizations after their release. Several detainees claimed they were subjected to physical violence, electric shocks, humiliation, sexual assault, and intimidation while in Israeli custody. Some activists alleged that women detainees experienced invasive searches and sexual harassment during detention. Israeli prison authorities denied the accusations and rejected claims of systematic abuse.
The incident triggered diplomatic tensions and international criticism. Governments, including Italy, France, Turkey, and several European states, condemned the interception and demanded the release of detained citizens. French authorities later banned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering the country after outrage surrounding videos showing detainees being mocked while restrained in custody.
Press freedom and human rights organizations also criticized the operation, particularly because journalists were among those detained. Reporters Without Borders condemned the detention of media workers aboard the flotilla and described the interception as an attack on press freedom and humanitarian activism.
The flotilla incident has intensified international debate over Israel’s blockade of Gaza, treatment of detainees, and restrictions on journalists and activists attempting to document conditions surrounding the war. Online reactions and rights groups have continued calling for independent investigations into allegations of violence and mistreatment during the interception and subsequent detentions
