The Cannes Film Festival has opened a photography exhibition dedicated to journalists and documentary creators who lost their lives while reporting on Russia’s war in Ukraine. The project pays tribute to media workers who documented the conflict under dangerous frontline conditions and highlights the risks faced by reporters covering the war.
The exhibition focuses on the work of French photojournalist Antoni Lallican and Ukrainian photographer Heorhii Ivanchenko, who collaborated while documenting civilian life in eastern Ukraine, particularly in frontline communities across the Donbas region. Their photographs capture the realities experienced by residents living under constant shelling and military attacks.
According to organizers, Lallican was killed during a Russian FPV drone strike in October 2025 while working in the Donetsk region. Ivanchenko survived the attack but suffered serious injuries. The Cannes exhibition marks the first occasion their work has been displayed together in a single venue, presenting a joint visual narrative of wartime Ukraine and the dangers journalists face while documenting the conflict.
The display was organized to recognize the contribution of photographers, filmmakers, and reporters who continue covering the war despite increasing threats to media workers. The exhibition also reflects broader concerns over journalist safety since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Multiple reporters, photographers, and documentary filmmakers have been killed while covering frontline developments and civilian suffering during the war.
Images presented at the festival portray destroyed neighborhoods, displaced civilians, soldiers, and everyday life in regions affected by the fighting. Organizers said the goal of the exhibition is to preserve the memory of journalists who died reporting on the war while ensuring their work continues reaching international audiences.
The Cannes Film Festival has increasingly included Ukrainian cultural projects, documentaries, and exhibitions related to the war in recent years. The photography installation joins a series of Ukraine-focused events taking place during this year’s festival, drawing attention to the ongoing conflict and the role of independent journalism in documenting its human impact.
