A Ukrinform journalist has been awarded a prestigious Italian military journalism prize in recognition of her frontline reporting on the Russia–Ukraine war, highlighting continued international acknowledgment of journalists working in conflict zones under extreme conditions.
According to reports, Olha Zvonariova, a correspondent for the Ukrainian national news agency Ukrinform, received the Premio Montecatini di Giornalismo 2026 in Italy. The award honours journalism focused on defence, security, and military affairs, particularly work that documents armed conflict and its impact on both soldiers and civilians.
The jury recognised Zvonariova for her extensive reporting from Ukraine’s frontline regions since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Her work has included coverage of military operations, evacuation efforts, and the daily realities faced by communities living near active combat zones. According to Ukrinform, she has produced hundreds of reports, interviews, and photo stories documenting the war’s evolving conditions.
Reports note that the award ceremony took place in Montecatini Terme, Italy, during a journalism and cultural festival, where international media professionals were also recognised for conflict reporting in other global hotspots. Organisers of the prize emphasized the importance of journalism that provides verified, on-the-ground perspectives from war environments, where access and safety remain significant challenges.
Zvonariova’s reporting is part of a broader body of Ukrainian war journalism that has gained international attention since 2022, as journalists continue to operate in high-risk environments to document military developments and civilian impact. Her work has been previously recognised for its contribution to public understanding of the war and for maintaining consistent frontline coverage despite security threats.
The recognition also reflects wider appreciation within the European journalism community for reporters covering the Russia–Ukraine conflict, which has resulted in numerous awards for both Ukrainian and international correspondents documenting the war’s humanitarian and military dimensions.
Overall, the award underscores the continuing role of frontline journalism in shaping global awareness of the conflict, while also highlighting the risks and professional demands placed on reporters working in active war zones.
